It seems to me that FDR has few pictures of him in his wheelchair and people helped him stand up and walk during his speeches and other public ordinances.
Why? I mean was he embarrased or something I dont understand.
(FDR's my favorite president woo!)
Only to change the why the world perceived him. He didn't want people to treat him as a cripple. Even now that still persist wikipedia doesn't even mention it.
I made this song for a history project in AP US History. All the instruments are recorded by me, the horrible vocals are also me. Yes I know they ...

he had polio which paralyzed his legs for the rest of his life.
did fdr really stand up like he did in the movie pearl harbor when he was at the table with everyone i was just wondering if he acually did it or they just made it for the movie
Not sure about that specific situation. But he often leaned on secret service, or military people, making it appear he was doing it on his own. And had other tricks when in public to cover it up. Hardly any Americans at the time knew he was in a wheelchair. The press was much more kind to politicians back then.
FDR, Ike, JFK, Johnson all had mistresses then, and the media covered for them.
During FDR s lifetime FDR was depicted as a robust individual and never ever featured as being in a wheelchair. In fact FDR and his aids and the press went to extremes to hide FDRs use of a wheelchair and there was a concensus that ot was 'bad' to depict an American President as having what was then called 'a handicap.' By the time the statue was made the term 'handicap' was politically incorrect and people across America were encouraged to be open about 'physical weakness' and so when the sculptor decided to show FDR as he was rather than as FDR prefered to display himself, new values came into conflict with old values. Now that the deed has been done the issue is mute and as time moves forward more so.

I ran across this discussion over at Neogaf and found it pretty interesting. For you old school gamers who remember NBA Jam, you may or may not have known that the current president at the time, Bill Clinton, was an unlockable character in the game. Should EA put the current United States president, who can actually play basketball (see video above) into NBA Jam? Even better, how about an all Presidents team? Could you imagine, Clinton, Obama, and let’s say FDR (wheelchair and all) against Kobe Bryant and company?
