design of electric wheelchair using voice and IR control?

I am a student doing b.tech in electrical and electronics.I am planning to do a project on a wheelchair which can be controlled using a joy stick as well as voice for the disabled. If any one can help me with the design ideas and the IC's and programs it will be a great help for me.

Ouch I hope you are up for a real struggle, a stick AND voice is a tall order. You are going to need to start with a DSP chip, I would recommend the TMS320, its a good processor. You are also going to need something for controlling your devices, that means an FPGA, (or a microcontroller of your choice like an ATMEL part). You are going to need a joystick actuator from APEM Components or someone else good, I would recommend the 2V17F1100 but it is expensive.
First thing is to gather your components and collect your wheelchair DC motor data, is it controlled by a word or a voltage? Write your VHDL program so that data comes in from the switch and goes out to the motor control board correctly. Then work on your DSP, you probabily want a look up table with 4 values so your voice can trigger one of the four commands.
again, good luck.

What is the best design for a Doggy Wheelchair for an English Bulldog?

Answer I'm looking for should lead me to something simple yet practical. Cost effective is a must.
I know where I can buy one, but I was thinking of making one, possibly out of a wheelchair or stroller.

I don't think any of them come cheap...staring around $200 (for a small breed), but I think they are all relatively the same idea:

It's a small price to pay for the happiness of your dog. They cost around $400 for my dogs' sizing...if one of them needed it; I'd get one in a heartbeat.

  • 12 Degrees of Freedom: “I call it my little angel machine''

The genius of Winter’s wheelchair lies in the design of the long ratchet-like levers that power it. Hold them low, near the axle, and it goes fast. Hold them higher up, and it generates a lot of torque, making it possible to climb slowly but surely over rocks and up hills. In effect, you change gears by changing your body geometry. For Winter, a 30-year-old native of Chesterfield, N.H., wheelchairs are an accidental passion. After earning his master’s in mechanical engineering at MIT in 2005, he was foraging for a summer project that would let him be with his girlfriend in Tanzania. His MIT mentor, professor Amy Smith, suggested that he look into wheelchair needs there. He did, and came back...
