Custom Seat Cushion

I created some seating near my entrance door using 12" cabinets that I mounted to the wall with a 2X4 as a spacer and support (along with some other shoring up to make sure you could sit on it without it breaking. Anyway, I want to create a cushion to go on top (I'm assuming out of plywood, batting and material). I've seen some DIY TV that show the process in passing but no detail. Anyone done this or know of a turtorial?

Go to your local fabric, or furniture supply, store. They'll have the cushions, batting, instruction booklets and fabric you'll require.

Thinking about having my husband build a bay window seat but i'm concerned about the price of having a custom cushion made. I'm pretty crafty so I figured I could make my own but was wondering about the cost. Has anyone ever attempted this, and if so, about how much did it cost you? Thanks so much!

Ahh this is actually a cake walk. The larger fabric stores carry the foam and will cut it to size they come in various heights. When we made our banquette I had a neighbor discarding a sofa and love seat and took their cushions. They already had a cover with a zipper. This allowed me to copy the pattern and I only need to buy the corner foam. I used velcro rather then a zipper as we use this in the breakfast nook and I wash it often. I put a plastic garbage bag over the cushions before the cover to keep spills from saturating to them this helps the cushions go on easier too. Making the cushion cover is pretty simple simply cut 1 inch larger all flat surfaces to allow a 1/2" seam. In the rear if you plan to add a zipper or velcro that piece needs to be 2 inches larger on the height Put a blind seam down the center to accommodate your fastener.

Making the banquette itself, rather then the piano hinge seats we put beadboard fronts on sliding tracks this makes it easier to get to the storage then pulling apart the seats and pillows. On the end sections we made drawers. These are fantastic for storage. My banquette is U shaped for a bay window I would do this.

As far as material you have to see what you want. you can get fabric for 3$ a yard or 75$ a yard. If you get more expensive fabric you can keep the cost down by adding less expensive material to the underside. Another thought to consider is make the top and bottom cushion in 2 different fabrics with the sides in a corresponding neutral allowing you to flip the cushions seasonaly.

If you want to do this in the least expensive option use a 1 peice cushion and cover it with a thin bedspread that you tailor.

Don't go less than 3"; 4" is better. Make sure the fabricator wraps the foam in dacron to make it look and feel cushier.

I have a seating area on my deck and wanted to have garden cushions made. The foam need to be water, mold, mildew,etc resistant, with covers that are removable.

Why not just buy some scatter cushions?

You would have to bring them in and store them, but I think even if you have cushions made that are weather proof, they will fade and get worn etc. So personally I would store then elsewhere and bring them out when you need them. We had some that stayed out when we lived abroad and we had to ditch them they did not last long! If you go abroad you will see the hotels bring in all their cushions off the sunbeds in over night to store them under cover......

I am looking for a cushion to fit a bench seat that is 82 by 15.5 inches. I would be content with one long cushion or 2 smaller ones, so long as their combined lengths were 82 inches. I have looked into custom cushions and pre-made cushions, but cannot find any to fit these size requirements and my price range. I don't want to spend much money on these cushions. Does anybody know a good store where I can find a cushion to fit these requirements for cheap? Please give me the web address if there is one. Thanks!

you should try Lowes the ones there are mostly for outside but that makes them easy to wipe clean and they have a variety of sizes. Good luck!
