Cushion Seat

I have a plain round stool and want to add a padded seat cushion. How do you make a round seat cushion?

Measure the diameter of your stool
Decide what you will use to fill it, filling or seating foam
Using foam, measure the depth of the foam you choose ½”, 1” 2”
Add this measurement with an additional 1” to the diameter of your stool

Stool diameter 12”; 2” foam; plus 1 “ = 15” diameter.

Recycle a newspaper or paper grocery bag and make yourself a template with your final diameter measurement – Card or Poster board also works well for templates

Decide if you will be using the same fabric for top and bottom.
Some prefer the non slip material for bottom

Place template on material, draw and cut your pattern. One each, for top and bottom.

Place two pieces of fabric together, right sides facing each other, and stitch half of the diameter ¾” from edge - if using filling you can sew ¾ of the diameter. If you have the option of double needle on your machine, I recommend using the double stitch for strength, or you can run a second stitch of the first round.

I suggest cutting little ‘v’s at 1” spaces around the edge of your fabric before turning to allow the roundness be smooth. (Do not touch your stitching)

Turn inside out, so right side of fabric is on the outside, stitching is on the inside, stuff and hand stitch closed. If using filling, you should be able to machine sew the closing.

You can detail the outside seams with piping, using fabric glue and a little hand stitching if you like.

This is a typical high back dining chair - no arm rests. The cushion is mounted on wood and it is the size of the chair and not meant to be removed. Somehow it came off and I don't see how it was mounted. I don't see any glue residue or anything like that. Is it OK to glue it on by gluing the underside of the seat cushion (wood) to the top of the chair rails? What kind of adhesive should I use?

Usually, there are corner blocks with screws up from the bottom into the wood. Often the hole becomes enlarged and the screws loosen, or in extreme cases, fall out. This is the standard way they are attached. Though today, I saw some with metal brackets into the rails and seat bottom.

Whatever you do, you want it to be reversible so you can recover or repair the pad seat at some point in the future. So screws, not nails or glue.

I know I trace my seat and I have old cushions to use as a guide, but I found some material online and was wondering how much to order per cushion. Any seasoned semstresses gvie me an idea?

Sounds like you are making your own cushions, sewing top and bottom squares together and then stuffing them, am I right?

Most upholstery fabrics are 54" wide. Now, I've never made my own (but I do sew), so I'm sort of guessing here. If you are ordering 54" wide fabric, I would allow at least 3/4 of a yard per cushion. You should get 2 squares cut out side by side. Depending on the size squares you are cutting, you may get 3.

If you're going to add a ruffle all the way around, you will need more. I would allow 1 1/8 to 1 1/4yard per cushion for ruffles.

If you are simply removing a seat and covering over the old fabric, 3/4 of a yard might get you 2 seats covered. If I were you, I'd go to Walmart and see if they have some 54" wide fabric that is only $1.00 a yard and see what you can do with it before ordering expensive fabric.

Why would it be called a water landing if we are not on land? Wouldn't that be a watering? Why would I need a floatation device if we were landing? I'm sure we would all float on top of land without a seat cushion.
ash didn't read the question. If it were ditching at sea, then it STILL wouldn't be a "landing" so perhaps you should read the question again.

To the average person an airplane has only a few configurations: Taxi, Taking off, flying, landing, crashing.

Some people dont even understand what it means to 'taxi'.

'Watering' wouldnt add any usefullness as a term. Do you notice that at NO point in the safety demonstration do they say the word 'crash'?

I ride the bus and subway everyday in New York City and am usually lucky enough to get a seat. Unfortunately, the seats aren't padded because of vandalism in the past and my butt gets really sore after a while. I am looking for a quality portable seat cushion that is really light and small enough to fit in my travel bag. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
