Billy's friend offered to modify wheelchair, increased speed, self-defense devices, and additional comfort?
DHC - Durea Resort - Chiang Mai - Thailand

is this legal? is it safe? my friend is very smart genius who can modify my wheelchair to do powerful incredible things and he is very rich too, but should i let him tamper with it?

I don't see any legal issues here, since it is not against any law to modify your own chair.

There could be a LOT of safety issues, especially with the speed increase. The higher the speed potential, the lower I'd want the seat. And, if the seat was too low, I'd be concerned with visibility, both with what I could see and with people and vehicles seeing me. (I know a lot of disabled people who use their power chairs on city sidwalks and streets, who mount a reflective flag and pole, like the ones bicyclists often have on their bikes.)

What does his being rich have to do with anything?

My bf is going to be in a wheelchair; how do I comfort him (and myself??) HELP PLEASE!!!!!!?
DHC - Durea Resort - Chiang Mai - Thailand

So my boyfriend is 16 years old, in tenth grade, and he has a condition called Osgood-Schlatter's disease. Basically, this is a condition that occurs mostly in teenage boys who are really active and put a lot of stress on their knees (through sports, etc.) Well, my boyfriend likes to be REALLY active...He skates, plays basketball, dances, and all kinds of other stuff. So he's always on his feet having fun doing some sort of activity...
Osgood-Schlatter's Disease is when an active (usually teeneage boy) has a BIG growth spurt in a short period of time, and that person's bones in their knee(s) become very weak. They become weak because they do not have time to grow thick and strong (like normal) because of a FAST growth spurt, and they end up being very thin and can break easily.
My boyfriend probably grew about a whole foot within a year's time, so both of his knees are very weak. They hurt him a lot. He's gone to the doctor several times and tried simple treatments (using ice, limiting physical activity, taking Naproxen, etc.) but now the doc is ordering him to have a cast on each leg, COMPLETELY STRAIGHT, so he can not move his knees AT ALL. This means he will have to be in a wheelchair for AT LEAST 6 weeks.
He's really bummed out about it, and so am I. No more playing outside together, or going for walks, or even little things like him giving me a piggy-back ride (haha). And not to mention that simple things (like even kissing) could proove to be difficult. So what can I do to keep my spirits up, and help my boyfriend get through this? I really care about him; we've been together for nearly 3 years, plus he's my best friend, so I know him and he knows me almost perfectly. My point is I'm not going to do something stupid like break up with him or blame it all on him, and I know that I should be extra loving and caring and understanding, but...how? I can never seem to find the right words when he gets upset, and even hugs and kisses and backrubs won't do the trick. Also, I know that we can find other "sit-down" activities to do, like playing video games together, but do you have any other ideas? And once aain, HOW do I lift his spirits up (and mine)? I want to be a good girlfriend AND best friend to him and keep him as happy as possible, but I'm going to have trouble staying happy too. It doesn't help that I'm practically depressed for 2 weeks out of a month because of PMDD...HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…

You have the right idea... you guys just need to find other activities and new memories to make together... play board games, watch all the movies that you have not gotten caught up on, push him in his wheelchair for walks so he can get fresh air, find games that he can play while sitting down or make up new versions of the games and sports that he already loves... find some new hobbies that you guys can do that do not require much movement. Just remember... at least it is only 6 weeks, it could be a whole lot worse.

board games
movies/ t.v. shows
painting
taking pictures
fishing
scenic drives to places you have never been

get him lots of magazines to read while he is sitting around/ or stuff that he can do with his hands and arms so that he is getting SOME activity.

hope this helps a little bit! I'm sorry to hear about your situation but you seem like you really care about him so I know you will do a good job helping him get through it!

Should I buy my son a wheelchair for Christmas?
DHC - Durea Resort - Chiang Mai - Thailand

Okay, so its a late christmas gift. Anyway, his girlfriend is disabled and lives on a wheelchair (dyslexia also), would it comfort him if i buy him a wheelchair also? Would it be better for their relationship? Can you suggest some models? Will they know he is not disabled when he wears it?

NOTE: My son is normal
MY SON did not ask for a wheelchair. Im assuming he needs one/

No. It would not. Your son can live a perfectly normal life on legs and it would be disrespectful to her and other people who are disabled to buy him a wheelchair when he doesn't need it.

If you want to do something for him, have a father/son chat and make sure he is ok.

If he wants a wheelchair, perhaps he needs to see a councilor because he is not dealing with the issues in his relationship.

How do you make a wheelchair out of a desk stool?
DHC - Durea Resort - Chiang Mai - Thailand

I really want to get a wheelchair for my cousin, but right now, I don't have the money. I wanna make a good quality wheelchair, and the only thing I can buy for it is the wheels which I know a place with cheap wheelchair wheels. It's about 1' 2" HEIGHT and 1'4" WIDTH . It has 3" blocks of wood which I think would be good for wheels, front and back. But the stool has no back, so I wanted to see suggestions about that, and foot platforms for more comfort. But my cousins birthday is a week from now and I need to start quick, so I need some answers now!

You must not like ur cousin all that much. Instead of risking physical harm when that contraption falls apart, buy a decent used one. If he really needs a wheelchair rent one until you can buy or the rental place may know how to get gov't assistance for one.

BTW, what's he using right now to get around?

  • Wheelchair Accessory Addons For More Comfort and Diversibility

Add-ons for a wheelchair come in diverse shapes and sizes and serve various purposes. Nevertheless, some of these add-ons are not an essential element to be used by the rider but just a luxury. Below are details in identifying which of these add-ons are essential for an individual on a mobility chair.

Initially, it is good to verify the primary things that are necessary for you as you perform your daily activities while riding your mobility chair. As you write it all down, be sure to weigh the most important ones than those add-ons that have a less significance to you.

When everything is settled, assess your wheelchair and what possible add-ons that you may attach to it. Then...
