We're renting a house that has no wheelchair accessibility. Their last house they said didn't have ramps either and that their son built them. My G/F and I, as landlords, are wondering the legality of allowing the family to build this ramp and how we can put it somewhere in the lease that avoids us from being liable 100%.
Rita, thanks. Most of my question was in regards to them building it themselves.
By law, you must allow handicap modifications if you rent the property to someone in a wheelchair. As part of your lease, you should (for all renters) require renters insurance to cover their belongings together with any potential liability that may arise because of their tenancy. You should also require that the ramp be built to code (whatever the local laws require as far as handrails, etc.). In addition, you can require the ramp be removed upon termination of the lease.

You need to build a wheelchair ramp to a porch that is 2 ft 4 inches off the ground. The ramp must have a slope of a 1 in 12. How far away from the house must the end of the ramp be?
For every 1 unit of rise, there are 12 units of run. That's what slope means.
So multiply the height by 12 to find out how long the ramp is.

Eva is 85 and her daughter is 61. They haven't been able to hug one another for years because neither of them can navigate the stairs anymore. I'm looking for a volunteer program in Colorado (Watkins), that can build a ramp for them. Mom (Eva) has several complications and is basically a shut in and the daughter has rheumatoid arthritis and can't get up the steps. Any ideas will be totally appreciated. Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays to all of you in Answers land.
Check with the boy scouts, as that could be a merit badge for them

We need a wheel chair ramp for my wife who is depended on oxygen and is a diabeticand has copd and she has gotten to the point where she cannot get in and out of our doublewide mobile home anymore ,where can I find help for her,I'm not a carpender and know nothing about how to build one safely, can't aford to pay a contracter a whole lot of money.where do people find help without being on those long waiting list.
Check with local service clubs such as Kiwanis, Rotary, JayCees, Boy Scouts, etc. Perhaps a local church & it's members may offer to help. Good hearted people & volunteers are in every community. They just need to know who needs help. Perhaps you could get your local newspaper to put out an appeal?
