Hi! I am a 20-year-old from Asia who has not known the limitlessness of life until I met Tif, an outdoor American girl who brought me on bike rides and donkey rides. I have never travelled without my parents but would like to do so within the next year. Any suggestions?
Several issues include: wheelchair accessibility, accessible bathroom, backpacking tools, light-weight mobility equipments, options for transportation, cost? We have considered Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, China, and the Philippines... but we don't know if it is too difficult for us.
Also, what can we do to get sponsors and people to help? We're thinking of putting together an inspirational program and both of us can speak to inspire the local people. Please suggest!!!
I am an American male in good health and I find getting around in most Asian cities a real challenge, Not only do they not have handicapped accessible public bath rooms. they do not even have bath rooms.
There are very few places that you will find a sidewalk in the sense that we think of a sidewalk. If it is a sidewalk, there are vendors set up on it and people driving trucks on it.
The major cities of China do not fit this pattern. You can get around Beijing, Shenyang, Shenzhen very well. But public transport is not accessible. Forget about trying Bangkok or Manila.
But if you have enough grit , you can do anything. It really depends on your mind set.
Try it and love the adventure !
Because they haven't ever made it through to the top 36 the ones we can vote for, and they wouldn't show anyone who made it to the other rounds because they don't want people screaming at the top of their lungs that Idol is "fixed" or that idol is "discriminating against handicapped people." Which the second you brought it up they started doing it. I'm sure someone has auditioned, and if they didn't make it through the audition round because they were just okay, then they wouldn't be shown irregardless. They only people they show on the audition rounds are the exceptional (the best singers and the worst/ biggest jokes.) They wouldn't want to accidentally imply that a handicapable person is a joke. Trust me, like they have the feel good moments with the blind guy, they'd do the same with a handicapped person if they ever made it as far as he has, it would be much too compelling of a compelling tv and good ratings garner not too. They just have to make sure they have the right person, sweet with an undeniable talent, like the blind guy. I haven't watched Idol since I saw his audition because I'm waiting for them to get to the top 12 when it's interesting again to me, so forgive me for not knowing his name.
He broke a leg in two places and has arthritis....
I already have the American Girl doll wheelchair and a sew able walker for my doll, but the My Twinn one looks more realistic. I'm trying to create a realistic doll I might be able to display in my future classroom to talk about with students.

Edit: I do have the American Girl doll wheelchair! Honest (as stated in original detail). I want one that's -realistic- or at least looks more so, which is why I like the one from the My Twinn dolls.
American Girl Dolls are 18 inches in height. The dolls at My Twin are usually 20 or 21 inches in height. What I have usually found is that clothing from My Twinn fits long on the American Girl dolls. I figure the doll would probably fit in the chair but it may seem a little large.
I do have another suggestion. American Girl used to make another Wheel Chair that was blue with black seat fabric. You can probably find one affordably on Ebay.
Good Luck!
ETA: Looking at the dimensions of the chair on MyTwinn I believe that your doll should fit OK. AMAZING it looks like the one I rode in when I broke my leg! And on sale right now for $34.oo it is a great price!

American Women Athletes Four: The Disability Post
We’ll start off with a general overview of the current situation of women athletes who are disabled.
Gender Equality in Athletics and Sports:Disabled Women in Sports
Getting interested and involved in sports is difficult for women and girls with disabilities because of the limited exposure they get to sports, especially when they are young. Those who become disabled during their adult life, by things like accident or illness, are many times already involved in athletics. When that is the case, they are highly likely to remain active in sports.
Disabled athletes often need to feel empowered in order to get involved in athletics. Nondisabled people learn sports primarily through their families when they are children. Athletes with disabilities, however, often attribute their participation and success to self-motivation and friends. Women athletes who become disabled later in life already have a support system of teachers, coaches, friends, and partners who still encourage them. Disabled athletes with encouraging, supportive parents are often leaders in their sport and community. They believe their success in leadership is a result of good parenting.
