I'm in a wheelchair -- Possible to lose weight with no exercise?
Morning siesta

I recently broke both of my legs and fractured several vertebrae in my back and neck (drunk driver hit me) and am confined to a wheelchiar for several months as i work thru therapy. What I want to know is if I consume 500 to 1000 calories per day (closer to 800 actually) will i lose weight even though I wont be able to exercise at all?

Any time you lower your calorie intake, you will lose weight. However, in your situation, losing weight could be bad for your bones right now... Since you're in the process of healing, you should consult your doctor's office and ask them what you need to do. Maybe consuming the lower calories and taking a good multi-vitamin and supplemental calcium tablets might help. I'd seriously check with your doctor, though.

I'm real sorry about your accident. I hope that person gets what they deserve! I wish you a speedy and safe recovery.

One arm drive wheelchair...?
29-Nov-2007 traveling gopal1035 (50)

I recently had to purchase a wheelchair when i broke my hip, femur, and arm. It is a one arm drive wheelchair that can be controlled by the user using only one arm. The kit to make a regular wheelchair do this is $850. The wheelchair itself was $800.
I dont want to make a huge profit or rip anybody off or anything, but it was really difficult for me to purchase this specialty item because i was out of work for 4 months.
I know i can try craigslist, and ebay, but was wondering if there were any other medical type sites where i could list the item and see if it sells.
Any ideas?

Electric wheelchair are usually made to measure, so it will depend on if you find a person who is the same height, weight and build, let alone if they have only one arm operable. Best of Luck

Are there any programs out there that will help my elderly disabled mother with homecare?
Grand Day Out

My mother is 78 years old and an amputee in a wheelchair. She doesn't want to go into a nursing home but she can't be alone all day either. Nursing homes cost money as well. The cheapest home health companion would cost $800 a month; her social security wouldn't even cover that. Could medicaid or any other programs out there help?

If you live in the U.S., then check with your Local Area Agency on Aging to see what programs are available in the area where your mom lives. She may qualify for Medicaid in her state; and there may be other programs and agencies that could help her as well. It helps if she can work with a case manager who can find out what she needs to stay at home and then help her apply for programs.

You can use the ElderCare Locator to find your local Area Agency on Aging or other programs for your mom:

You might also be able to find help through the United Way Information and Referral phone service: Dial 2-1-1 from a local phone.

How do you file a complaint against a place who is not in compliance with the Americans w/ Disabilities Act?

I noticed that at a bar I go to that a man with a heavy wheelchair could not go in because they had no ramps. An employee tried to help but I heard him say that it weighed 800 pounds. The guy actually started to cry, saying "What did I do wrong?" I felt so bad for him! Even if he got in I don't think that the bathrooms would be accesible and forget about going upstairs!

You are right the American Disability Act would prohibit discrimination in public accommodation, See American with Disability Act,title III. The title III generally covers private facilities offering services to public in general. Those typical private facilities in compliance with the Act are movie theaters, retail stores, public schools, hotels, restaurants, funeral homes, airports-bus depots, day care centers, etc and etc ... However, I am not sure if the Act would cover a private bar.

Here is a quote from the Justice Department:
Complaints of title III violations may be filed with the Department of Justice. In certain situations, cases may be referred to a mediation program sponsored by the Department. The Department is authorized to bring a lawsuit where there is a pattern or practice of discrimination in violation of title III, or where an act of discrimination raises an issue of general public importance. Title III may also be enforced through private lawsuits. It is not necessary to file a complaint with the Department of Justice (or any Federal agency), or to receive a "right-to-sue" letter, before going to court. For more information, contact:

  • Michigan man carves out pumpkin niche

Moody carved his first pumpkin at age 6. He is now one of the premier pumpkin carvers in America. (Say that fast.)

Moody, who turned 60 on Friday, has carved 23 giant pumpkins — weighing more than 200 pounds — that sit in his front yard.

    It is a Halloween Stonehenge.

Around this time of year, Moody’s house is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Michigan. More than 50,000 pumpkin fans — 5,000 on Halloween weekend — will visit the Moody homestead.

A dozen smaller pumpkins line the porch of Moody’s 93-year-old wood frame house at 722 Leelanau Ave., near downtown Frankfort.

His pumpkins are Michigan grown, with most of the big ones coming from the Michigan Giant Pumpkin Growers group.  They’ve been growing since April.

During my visit, Moody was carving a 1,489-pound
