What is more fashionable than a walker/cane?
Awaits

My 89 year old granny really needs a walker or cane to get around, but she refuses because it is not fashionable enough. She is a very fashionable lady who has about 30 pairs of purple high heels and always looks well dressed. She is a spit-fire and the best woman that I know. Are there other options out there? Suggestions would be appreciated.

How long will it take for me to walk without a walker or cane after total hip replacement?
Martin Brodeur, Scott Walker & David Clarkson

It varies. After 4 months, in MOST uncomplicated cases, a patient is relatively pain-free, has full mobility of the hip, and can walk with a minimal or no limp. In most cases, FULL recovery takes about 4 to 6 months.

The success of your recovery will depend in large measure on how well you follow your orthopaedic surgeon's instructions regarding home care during the first few weeks after surgery

Wound Care: You will have stitches or staples running along your wound or a suture beneath your skin. The stitches or staples will be removed about two weeks after surgery.

Avoid getting the wound wet until it has thoroughly sealed and dried. A bandage may be placed over the wound to prevent irritation from clothing or support stockings.

Diet: Some loss of appetite is common for several weeks after surgery. A balanced diet, often with an iron supplement, is important to promote proper tissue healing and restore muscle strength. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids.

Activity: Exercise is a critical component of home care, particularly during the first few weeks after surgery. You should be able to resume most normal light activities of daily living within three to six weeks following surgery. Some discomfort with activity and at night is common for several weeks.

Your activity program should include:

*A graduated walking program, initially in your home and later outside
*Walking program to slowly increase your mobility and endurance
*Resuming other normal household activities
*Resuming sitting, standing, walking up and down stairs
*Specific exercises several times a day to restore movement
*Specific exercises several times a day to strength your hip joint
*May wish to have a physical therapist help you at home

Does anyone know where I would be able to get accessories for my new Carbon Fiber Cane and Walker combo?
98

that I received for Christmas?

I was slightly concerned with the material because I was unsure if it would break if I smashed some youngin in the head with it. I was assured however that it would suffice.

I just need to know where I can get some accessories like a horn and reflectors and stuff.

You got a license for that walker, gramps?

two artificial legs below the knee how many people can walk like that without a cane or walker.?
96

I am a male 62 years of age had problems with circulation about two years ago and had to amputate my two legs below the knee. When that happened to me I though I am finished will never walk again. Year later I am walking without a cane or walker and am walking normally. Nobody can really tell that I have two artificial legs on unless you tell that person. For the people out there who have no legs or even one leg off don't ever give up hope. Keep trying and you will walk again. Where there is a will there is a way. I hope that I have helped alot of people out there.

Good for you. One of the soldiers I know through my troop support work lost one just below the knee and the other just above. He's walking, and working on running. He won't be able to go back, though. He's been medically retired, with a pension.

An officer currently serving in Iraq lost one of his below the knee. They wanted to pension him off, which would have made easy livin' for him, but he asked to stay, learned how to walk AND run, and volunteered to go back.

Is there anything similar to a walker, but not as bulky?
97

I need to find something for my elderly aunt, because she is having increasing tendencies to fall at home. She refuses to use a walker, which i don't really blame her for because they are so bulky to lug from room to room in your own house. Is there anything that can give her more stability than one of those canes with the 4 legs at the bottom, but isn't as bulky and cumbersome as a walker?

Have you tried a walker with two wheels or sliders? That might provide support, but also be a bit easier to 'lug' around.
You might wish to check with a home health company that specializes in this; I think even Walgreen's and CVS can direct you.

Good luck!

  • Canes Country Exit Analysis: Scott Walker - Canes Country

The Good: Walker can always be counted to stand up for his teammates and provide grit and an edge to the forward corps. He also upped his game in the postseason, adding six assists to his series-winning goal against Boston for seven points in 18 games. He averaged almost two hits per game (79 in 41 games) in just 13:19 minutes of ice time a night. His goal against Boston will go down as one of the franchise's all-time biggest and most inspirational goals, especially given the personal circumstances.

The Bad: Walker was riddled by injuries, missing half the season mostly due to a broken hand and concussion issues. When healthy, Walker's production has dropped each season since he's joined the Hurricanes . In 2008-09 he managed just 15 points (five goals, 10 assists), which was less than half of the previous season and 36 less than the 51 he managed in 2006-07, his first in Carolina. For $2.5 million, it's hard to justify the amount he makes for the role he's expected to play.
