I had a discecomy 3 years ago. Minor issues since then, but in the last couple of days, I have had major problems. I wake up 3 hours into sleep with extreme pain in my leg to the point of barely being able to get out of bed and walk this morning (had to take baby steps using chair as walker). Just rolling over at night is excruciating. Going to see a doctor, but any advice would be appreciated. I sleep on my side or back with my legs 90 degree angle w/ pillow between or under my legs. Maybe sleeping on the floor would help? I just need to be able to sleep through the night and be able to function in the morning. I am in good physical condition otherwise and stretch twice daily. I have been taking ibuprohen before bed as well as using Tiger balm, a compression bandage and stretching immediately before sleep. Even advice directing me to support groups for this issue would be appreciated as I am at my wits end trying to keep functioning.
This is looking at your problem in muscular problems.
I am a massage therapist / neromuscular therapist and we work alot on cases like this.
Let me talk about not being able to roll over at night and problems walking in the morning.
1. There is a muscles in the low back called Quadratus Lumborum thats function is for turning, twisting, and holding you upright. This muscle attachment points are your last rib, to your lumbar verterbrae, to the top of your hips. When this muscles develops a trigger point or knot it can have impact on a person life, such as not being able to turn at night, or something as getting up in the morning and doubling over in pain.
2. Sciatica. We see this often. Usually the first question we would ask is where exactly is your Sciatica. Is it going from the side of your leg down or the back of your leg down. There are a few muscles to consider. Piriformis because your Sciatic Nerve can possible run through this muscle and you will experience Sciatica. Also Gluteus Minimus also causes what we call Pseudo-Sciatica or False Sciatica but the pain is similiar to that of Sciatica.
What I would suggest is taking a look on the net for the following muscles and see if it resembles what you are experiencing, type in the muscles name and Pain Pattern
1. Quadratus Lumborum (QL)
2. Piriformis
3. Gluteus Minimus
Good Luck!!

A Roll-A-Bout is considered a durable medical supply (DMS) but most people rent them as a temporary solution to getting around when crutches are no longer an option (because of hand injuries, shoulders, back ect.) Most DMS are not covered by insurance so the battle begins with getting the right Medicare billing codes. If Medicare will pay, major medical is also suppose to pay. I am tyrying to get my information in order before I speak with them.
You're thinking along the right lines, but there's more to it than just getting the right codes. You have to also have the correct ICD-9 diagnosis codes that would enable you to bill the code set aside to specifically bill Medicare for DME (DMS...depends on where you work, but has the same meaning.) And then you have to consider where treatement for the illness took place so you use the correct code there, and then don't forget the 70 code if this person is in anyway connected with Hospice. If you know the basics of billing Medicare, then you should be able to find what you need here:
http://www.cms.hhs.gov/home/medicare.asp
And typically, Medicare A wouldn't pay for DME, but Medicare B will in some situations...and if you're in a skilled nursing or rehab setting at the time of need for the DME, then they are ultimately responsible for payment of the DME since they are paid by Medicare to cover all of your expenses while being treated. If you need help, you can email me privately. But without more information, I can only offer what I've shared so far.

Is there a way of quickly cleaning my walkers wheels before entering a building?
I have a good friend who recently bought a house, I have one problem with the house: It's got white carpet. I am afraid when I go to her house I am going to ruin her rug, with my dirty wheels. She asks everyone to take off their shoes, she knows I need the walker to walk and can't take off the wheels. If I clean them at home before I go to her house they will get dirty by the time I get there.
I take my walker every place outside in the grass, mud, dry dirt, on the hot pavement of parking lots, in restaurants where people drop food and it's not cleaned up right away so you walk through it and my wheels pick it up, every place that you would walk my wheels go, so they get pretty dirty.
I can't bend down to wipe them with any thing. So I need some thing that I can roll on or put the wheels in that will clean the dirt off them quickly like under 2 minutes.I'm not too concerned about germs.
I only have one walker and can't afford another one for indoor use only.
This is a very serious question.
I ask that people remove their shoes in my home also - and I don't have white carpet - just a cleanliness thing.
I also use a walker and a wheelchair.
Buy one of those microfiber hair towels or a microfiber dish rag - they are small and work really well. If wheels are dry, then just put down towel and roll over a few times, but If wet, it seems to me that just rolling the wheels on a mat or a towel doesn't work as well as someone wiping them down. Just ask your friend to wipe the wheels for you, she won't mind.
If you really want to do it yourself, try those light weight bath sponges on a plastic stick. I have one from PT - it is a cheap blue sponge on a white stick to give reach.
I never speak with this woman. I tell my husband things he should discuss with her (but he never does). I recently discussed with my husband that I don't want my daughter using a walker. They can delay normal muscle control and mental development, children can roll down the stairs, get burned, reach higher things, and even with adult supervision babies can be hurt because you can't respond quick enough.
I never email my mother in law, and I try to get my husband to voice OUR concerns, but he said that "Since it's free, don't worry about it." Well I dont' care how much it costs her, I dont' want to use it. It was probably already purchased or it will be purchased tonight before she'll get the email. If I email her and ask her to return it, will I look terrible? I'm going to give her links and references. I'm my daughter's mother and I'm looking out for her best interest!
Maybe you can print them out and you both can go over all the info together....

TherExtras: Define walking.
We do a lot of side stepping with Charlie and he's a lot more amenable to that. Actually, he's amenable to almost anything besides the Gait Trainer. The gait traienr seperates him from every else and he just doen'st "get it." We even do forward-step practice by constantly moving a chair forward while he's leaning against it. Our therapist is going to bring over a reverse walker and see if that makes more sense to him. We'll see.
Katy,
I am obviously not familiar with your son but I wanted to add this comment. In my experience, I have worked with three children with cerebral palsy, who absolutely disliked the confinement of a gait trainer. They did much better walking pushing a tall chair or even a ladderback chair used in conductive education. A posterior walker was not an option for these children. The tricky part is getting the chair to go in different directions. The children were able to walk in a straight line but turning was rather difficult. Good luck with Charlie.
