My mom has a power chair (not a scooter) and is spending more and more time in it to get around. She wants to get out of the house occasionally, like to go to the store, church or even the doctor's office, and is no longer able to manage with a walker or a cane. We need to get a lift platform (I don't know what it's really called) that attaches to the back of a car on a hitch and allows you to roll the power chair onto it so you can take it with you. I've seen them online for $1000+, and since she's on disability and Medicare, that's definitely beyond our means. Will Medicare cover this like they did the chair itself?
Your mom is lucky to have your help!
You don't say exactly where you live or how old your mom is, however you do say that she is getting Medicare, so I will assume that she is over age 60 and that you live in the United States or one of the U.S. Territories. If this is so, and you want to discuss this question with "real people" who are familiar with Medicare rules and know other possible resources for your mom and you as a caregiver, I would highly recommend that you call the Area Agency on Aging serving the community where you live.
Professionals at the Area Agency on Aging provide guidance in helping seniors and their caregivers. Believe me, questions like this pop up and affect seniors' lives every day -- Area Agency on Aging staff will know the best way to cut through the red tape to help you find out possible ways to get help that you are needing. I am confident that you will find the Area Agency staff friendly and helpful. They will help answer Medicare-related questions in an easy-to-understand way and they will likely know options that might help with your mom's mobility challenges.
If you live in the United States or one of the territories, there is an Area Agency on Aging serving where you live. You can call toll-free 1-800-677-1116 to find how to contact the one serving you. When you make the call to your local Area Agency on Aging ask for the staff in "Information and Assistance" or the staff that helps "Family Caregivers."
Another thing to know about Area Agencies on Aging is that most of them have information and resources that help and support family caregivers, so you might want to ask about this when you make your call.
If you do contact your local Area Agency on Aging and like the help that they give you, let your local county officials and your folks in Congress know. Area Agencies on Aging are funded under the Older Americans Act and they don't have big budgets! Your contribution to help provide important information and assistance services other caregivers and to your older friends and neighbors would be appreciated--but is absolutely not required-- to get the help you need .
Hope this helps! Best wishes to you and to your mom!

I had a discecomy 3 years ago. Minor issues since then, but in the last couple of days, I have had major problems. I wake up 3 hours into sleep with extreme pain in my leg to the point of barely being able to get out of bed and walk this morning (had to take baby steps using chair as walker). Just rolling over at night is excruciating. Going to see a doctor, but any advice would be appreciated. I sleep on my side or back with my legs 90 degree angle w/ pillow between or under my legs. Maybe sleeping on the floor would help? I just need to be able to sleep through the night and be able to function in the morning. I am in good physical condition otherwise and stretch twice daily. I have been taking ibuprohen before bed as well as using Tiger balm, a compression bandage and stretching immediately before sleep. Even advice directing me to support groups for this issue would be appreciated as I am at my wits end trying to keep functioning.
This is looking at your problem in muscular problems.
I am a massage therapist / neromuscular therapist and we work alot on cases like this.
Let me talk about not being able to roll over at night and problems walking in the morning.
1. There is a muscles in the low back called Quadratus Lumborum thats function is for turning, twisting, and holding you upright. This muscle attachment points are your last rib, to your lumbar verterbrae, to the top of your hips. When this muscles develops a trigger point or knot it can have impact on a person life, such as not being able to turn at night, or something as getting up in the morning and doubling over in pain.
2. Sciatica. We see this often. Usually the first question we would ask is where exactly is your Sciatica. Is it going from the side of your leg down or the back of your leg down. There are a few muscles to consider. Piriformis because your Sciatic Nerve can possible run through this muscle and you will experience Sciatica. Also Gluteus Minimus also causes what we call Pseudo-Sciatica or False Sciatica but the pain is similiar to that of Sciatica.
What I would suggest is taking a look on the net for the following muscles and see if it resembles what you are experiencing, type in the muscles name and Pain Pattern
1. Quadratus Lumborum (QL)
2. Piriformis
3. Gluteus Minimus
Good Luck!!

So, I'm going to Walmart to purchase my High Chair and Playpen, next week. We have been feeding our son out of his walker, ehh hes 5months and just hasnt worked the best. and hes getting More mobile now with Rolling everywhere and well on his way to sitting up, so need a play pen.
What do you suggest?
We don't have a lot of money to spend but, I seen this awesome Evenflo High Chair that has the Animal Circus pattern on it? Heard they were nice? Weve also got the Evenflo Megasaucer and I think I read that all these toys fit on this high chair?
My Son is named Noah so Noah's Ark is his theme in his room, and so we mainly look for things with animals on it if we can get it! =)
I also think they may have a play pen with the same design?
Anyone have any feedback on the high chair, and a good play pen from walmart??
Or a Good High Chair or playpen you liked from anywhere that wasnt outrageously expensive??
Thanks in Advance!! =)
hmm, very good point on the weight limit!
My So is already 28inches long, and 21lbs...
But, I do think that I can get some use out of one. We have a Consignment store so whatever I buy i always get at least half or more out of what i paid for it.
We've set aside funds for a High Chair and Playpen. Not the most in the world but, Enough to get both and were just wanting some suggestions?
I think I am going to go with the Evenflo High Chair Ive been reading about it now and it seems very nice.
But the play pen is up in the air....hmmm??
Any other suggestions/answers?
Well a play pen in our home definitely wont be an all the time thing but, I will feel safer my son being confined when I am having to do things like wash dishes, do bottles, laundry, clean something else or use the bathroom..etc..
throw a couple toys in there with him, and do what i have to do.
Hes 5months and will pick up ANYTHING he can get his hands on and it goes straight to his mouth. So, this worries me a lot when I cant have my eye on him ALLL the time!
Ive also seen those like little things you put together, I cant think of what to call them lol..But All I can compare them to is almost like a Kennel for a dog but, you snap the pieces together in your floor for them to play just in that one spot?? Anyone use something like this? It seems to me that this would be possibly unsafe though??
I have the high chair you are talking about, only the version that they sold two years ago (same exact features, different print). After my girl ate, she would fall asleep and I would just lean her back and roll her aside and let her nap. The recling feature is great for little ones who aren't experts at sitting up on their own just yet. My girl is 2 and she still eats most meals in the high chair. I love it and am SOOO glad I chose that one.
I've spoken to him before about his music playing and the bass bothering me and he was very understanding. My upstairs neighbor is a VERY heavy walker. That I can put up with but when he clunks around in his heeled boots, the whole room shakes makes me cringe but I can understand that he's able to do what he pleases.
My question is, would it be inappropriate for me to ask him to quiet down a little when it's very early in the morning?
He drops things, moves a rolling chair back and forth, and clunks around in his shoes and it's been waking me up everyday I'm able to sleep in.
There is also one spot in my ceiling (his floor, we have hardwood floors) that creaks VERY loudly when he steps in that spot, would I be inappropriate to ask my management to fix it?
politely ask em once more.
consult management about the floor dilemma.
If sounds continue , consult management, letting them know you have spoken with him a few times...
I think it will strenthen my sons legs and help him learn to walk.
My son crawls but not forward he goes backwards then he gets upset and crys. how can I help him to crawl forwards. My son will seven months the 27 of september.
Is he where he should be (developmentally) he rolls over, he can somewhat crawl ( its more of a scoot ch) he can pull his self up too a standing position if he hangs on too your fingure. he will stand holding on to a chair for awhile. he sits by himself.
He smiles and laughs at everything. he talks.( LIKE baa ,da, ma, things like that) so how is he doing?
so how is he doing? and what should I work with him on?
It sounds like your boy is doing fine! Not all babies master the art of crawling! I know many people say that walkers are unsafe (because they have wheels and can fall down stairs...), but my son always loved his! Note that a walker will not help your baby learn to walk! In fact they can make learning to walk more difficult because they baby get used to the support of a walker. A walk-behind push toy is a much better aid in walking. Walkers and saucers are a great way to get your baby working his legs though, and they are fun!
