My great grandmother fell and broke her hip last year. She is 98. She is terrified of falling and consequently won't even try walking with her walker. What is the best way to lift her from a chair or bed into her wheelchair without her having to exert much effort?
The best way is simply not to lift her. Always keep her
in the wheelchair so you can push her where she needs to go. To change from wheelchair to commode, the commode needs to be the same height as the wheelchair.
some nurses use a belt under the armpits and it's just
lift and swing. But she has to help as much as possible,
otherwise it's staying in the bed.
You cannot lift "dead" weight for very long or you will
have a broken hip yourself. There are tricks to doing it but you need her help.
In care homes there is an electrical conveyance that will lift the person and is carried in mid-air and lowered
into a tub or wherever they need to be.
No care provider is expected to lift a patient even in a care home anymore.

My mom has a power chair (not a scooter) and is spending more and more time in it to get around. She wants to get out of the house occasionally, like to go to the store, church or even the doctor's office, and is no longer able to manage with a walker or a cane. We need to get a lift platform (I don't know what it's really called) that attaches to the back of a car on a hitch and allows you to roll the power chair onto it so you can take it with you. I've seen them online for $1000+, and since she's on disability and Medicare, that's definitely beyond our means. Will Medicare cover this like they did the chair itself?
Your mom is lucky to have your help!
You don't say exactly where you live or how old your mom is, however you do say that she is getting Medicare, so I will assume that she is over age 60 and that you live in the United States or one of the U.S. Territories. If this is so, and you want to discuss this question with "real people" who are familiar with Medicare rules and know other possible resources for your mom and you as a caregiver, I would highly recommend that you call the Area Agency on Aging serving the community where you live.
Professionals at the Area Agency on Aging provide guidance in helping seniors and their caregivers. Believe me, questions like this pop up and affect seniors' lives every day -- Area Agency on Aging staff will know the best way to cut through the red tape to help you find out possible ways to get help that you are needing. I am confident that you will find the Area Agency staff friendly and helpful. They will help answer Medicare-related questions in an easy-to-understand way and they will likely know options that might help with your mom's mobility challenges.
If you live in the United States or one of the territories, there is an Area Agency on Aging serving where you live. You can call toll-free 1-800-677-1116 to find how to contact the one serving you. When you make the call to your local Area Agency on Aging ask for the staff in "Information and Assistance" or the staff that helps "Family Caregivers."
Another thing to know about Area Agencies on Aging is that most of them have information and resources that help and support family caregivers, so you might want to ask about this when you make your call.
If you do contact your local Area Agency on Aging and like the help that they give you, let your local county officials and your folks in Congress know. Area Agencies on Aging are funded under the Older Americans Act and they don't have big budgets! Your contribution to help provide important information and assistance services other caregivers and to your older friends and neighbors would be appreciated--but is absolutely not required-- to get the help you need .
Hope this helps! Best wishes to you and to your mom!

We just aquired a bunch of used medical equipment that is in decent condition (grandma passed away). We want to try to sell it to get a few bucks, but I'm not sure about selling on eBay since most items will be difficult to ship (walkers, sling lift, wheel chair, hospital bed, etc.). I have no idea about the value of these items either, so I'm hesitant to list them in the classifides or Craigslist. Any other ideas?
since no ebay, there is a sight called govdeals.com i just know how to price on it, not sure if there is a way to auction unless you are special.. also we have a place in our area called golsn.com where you can sell stuff... if your area has a place like that then try it, or try the local classifieds!!
to search the values, type in the brand name.. that will give you a ballpark figure!!

After a disappointing couple of weeks, Neil Craig decided to drop Walker so he could lift his game in the SANFL. while playing for the red-legs, he kicked 6 goals. except the only thing is, that he kicked them all in the first half, and was kept pretty silent in the 2nd half. Do you reckon this would be enough to show Craig that he's ready once again for AFL footy?
his stats altogether were 13 kicks, 8 marks and 6 goals
Brett Burton on the other hand has been out injured with his knee since last year, and played his first SANFL match just this past weekend. As said in a previous question, he kicked 4 goals, and had 19 possessions. he said the day after the match that his knee felt great, and that he was ready for a match with the Crows.
If I had to choose one, it would probably Burton, Lucky I'm not the bloke making the decisions, both might not even be looked at this week, after beating winning 6 on the trot, they exactly have to make changes.
i have a three monthe old baby she can hold her head up fine and sit up with just a little bit of support is it ok to put her into a walker just to sit in i will oviously lift it so her feet can not touch the floor. as she will no longer sit in her bouncy chair as she likes to be sat upright any advise is much apprieciated thankyou
A good solid walker with a large base is fine for even a 3 month old. If she does not fit in seat, prop a pillow behind her. Do not worry if her feet touch the ground....good exercise for her legs, even if she can't make it move yet. She will love it; all mine did at this age. Good luck and God bless.
