Anyone have any ideas? I care for my elderly inlaws, and their bathroom door is too narrow for their walkers and wheelchairs. I cannot find these aids that are less wide than their existing ones.
Offset door hinges allow the door to open another inch or more, which is sometimes all it takes, and are a simple and cheap solution.
Older homes can be tough to adapt- small doors, bad angles and halls, etc. You often need to get very creative, and sometimes you need to spend a bit.
For example, another option would be a ceiling-mounted track for a patient lift so you could transfer them in a roomier area and it would move them to where you need.
Or, you can use other options to bypass the bathroom- turn a corner of a more accessible room to a bathroom with a commode chair, brushing teeth in the kitchen, and and using bed baths most of the time.
This stroller is great for elderly people or those with weak knees or joints. Use it as support when strolling, and sit when tired. There's ...
you dont need training but a few pointers are needed.Hold the waker by both handles at all times when walking.YOUR arms should have a comfortable bend at the elbow ..this tells you that the walker is the correct hight. keep yourself in the center while moving along..dont let it get ahead of you where you have to bend and reach to hang onto it..also dont get up too close to it where you will lose you balance. If a 2 or four wheeled walker..just walk slowly and take your corners carefully and slowly until you get the hang of it.If a no wheeled walker ..pick the walker up and move it ahead 2feet ,walk into it and repeat.

My 91 year old mother broke her hip. She has been in rehab for about 20 days. They are discharging her but feel that she does not use her walker safely. She has never had to use any supportive devices in the past, so this is some thing new for her to learn. The therapist feel that because of her short term memory and impulsiveness she can't learn. I KNOW this isn't the case. They refuse to give her individual therapy in a private setting. So, knowing that she is easily distracted, they continued to provide therapy in a group setting. Plus, they refuse to continue therapy, even though her insurance (really) will cover 100 days because of a wrap around policy. Any way, I am so upset. I have suggested ways that will help her learn to use a device, which she is unfamiliar with. They just plan to stop therapy and not provide her with what she needs.

I need to find something for my elderly aunt, because she is having increasing tendencies to fall at home. She refuses to use a walker, which i don't really blame her for because they are so bulky to lug from room to room in your own house. Is there anything that can give her more stability than one of those canes with the 4 legs at the bottom, but isn't as bulky and cumbersome as a walker?
Have you tried a walker with two wheels or sliders? That might provide support, but also be a bit easier to 'lug' around.
You might wish to check with a home health company that specializes in this; I think even Walgreen's and CVS can direct you.
Good luck!

Doyle, Walker Fail Milwaukee County's Disabled And Elderly ...
Slicing Transit Plus to the minimum level would eliminate service to nearly all of Franklin, Hales Corners and Oak Creek, as well as to parts of Bayside, Brown Deer, Cudahy, Glendale, Greendale, Greenfield, River Hills, St. Francis, South Milwaukee, West Allis and Milwaukee’s far northwest and far south sides, said Autumn Misko, who handles transit advocacy at Independence First, a disability rights group.
“For a lot of Transit Plus users, Transit Plus is their only transportation option,” Misko said. “Lots of clinics, nursing homes and group homes in those areas would lose service.”
Also, some riders who live in those areas would be unable to move into the newly reduced service area because they couldn’t get out of their leases, Misko said.
