does putting your child in a walker make your child go bow legged?

i heard that putting your baby in a walker can discourage your child from walking and cause there legs to appear bowed.

There's a HUGE difference between allowing your baby to enjoy being in the walker (supervised, of course!) for 15-20 minutes and letting them live in it. Too much of anything for anyone isn't good.
Walkers aren't meant to 'teach' them how to walk & I can only tell you from my own experience that it didn't delay my son from walking and that he's not bow-legged. He LOVED being in his walker, even if was only for shot periods of time.

At what age can a child learn to use a walker?

I know nothing about babies an i want to get my friend a walker for his little girl.I think shes about 8 months old but at what age can a child learn to use one of these things? At what age will the child no longer need it?Thanks.

The walker I have is recommend for 4 months and up. However, many walkers were found to be unsafe - they can be unstable, and when they tip or collapse often lead to head injuries. You may want to consider an activity center or exersaucer instead.

How old is old enough to put my child in a walker?

My son is 4 and a half months, weighs 12 lbs. He is holding up his head on his own, and moves his feet like he wants to walk. He can stand with my help. Could I put him in a walker yet, or should I wait a couple more months?

I would wait a couple more months. Your baby may seem to be able to hold his head up on his own, but for what length of time, and will you be watching him continually? Also, early walking, especially this early, is hard on bone development in infants. It can cause deformation in bone structure due to premature weight being applied to bones that are not formed well enough to hold up the body. Though the walker helps distribute this weight, infants under 6 months are generally too small to sit properly in a walker, which makes weight distribution extremely difficult to achieve.

One more reason to reconsider this move is that walkers tend to give parents a bit of freedom, which can cause them to leave the child unattended for too long. One minute away from your baby is too long for a 4 month old infant in a walker.

How has Dandy Walker Effected Your Life, and the Life of Your Child?

I am almost 7 months pregnant, and my unborn daughter has been diagnosed with Dandy Walker Syndrom. I am trying to get a feel of the the degrees of difficulty anyone has had with a child that has been diagnosed, and has lived with this disorder. I would also like to hear from others that decided not to continue their pregnancies, and what made them make that decision?

I have not had a child with Dandy Walker, but I have had 2 students at the high school level with it. Oddly, as it is more common in girls, they were both boys. Both had learning disabilities, but the level on which they functioned was night and day. One was bright, took all regular classes with some sp. ed. support, got good grades, played varsity basketball. Other than having to work harder in school and have some minor accommodations, having a shunt and a slightly large head, he was "normal". To meet him you'd have no idea. He is now a sophomore in college. The other had more health issues...seems like he was always missing school due to ear infections, pnuemonia, etc. (not sure if these are related). This student took all special education classes. To look at him or to talk to him one could easily tell that there was something "wrong" with him. That being said, he still had a good quality of life...he has friends and, last I heard, worked a Wal-Mart. While he was clearly more affected by DWS, some of the differences may be due to other familial factors...the brighter boy came from an intelligent family and his other brothers and sisters were not in Sp. Ed., the other boy came from a family of low IQs and learning disabilities, so even without DWS he probably would have had learning disabilities. I don't know if these 2 boys are typical examples, as I don't know much statistically about DWS.

At what age can my child use a walker?

My child is 4 months old?

Walkers are not recommend to be used anymore for safety reasons and developmental issues. The way a baby uses their legs to move around in a walker can cause the hips to turn outward as well as cause changes in the muscle development (it's more of a push motion than a walking motion). If you need to put your baby in something, an Exersaucer (stationary) is much better.

Baby needs to be able to hold his/her head up well and have some upper body balance. Keep in mind if you do use a walker or exersaucer that baby shouldn't be in it for more than 20 minutes at at time for more than an hour total a day - it's important for baby to have a lot of floor time and time being held for all areas of development.

  • Hard Luck Child's Juke Joint: T-Bone Walker Box Set

"This is, especially for the money, an excellent overview of the career of Aaron Thibeaux Walker (aka T-Bone Walker). Beginning at the beginning in 1929, this set travels all the way through the '40s (where he developed his style as the electric blues genre), through 1951 on labels from Columbia to Capitol to Black and White and others in between. This set's 90 cuts paint the most intricate portrait of his signature sound as it developed to become one of the models for the blues of B.B. and Freddie King, and virtually every electric guitarist after him. The sound is great and the price is irresistible."
