Wheelchairs :(?
Hey Chas- your bricks are missing!

I just dislocated both of my knees. My mom says i don't need a wheelchair and can use some crutches but i can't even move one of my legs. Do i need a wheelchair? Anyone with expirence with them?
yes. i have seen thr doctor yet he mentioned nothing about it. and i've already previously dislocated both so yes, I KNOW.

I don't think that Mom is the expert in your case. What does the doctor say? Are you going to go to physical therapy? The therapist will also have an answer.

How accessible are the buildings to persons who are in wheelchairs, blind, or hearing-impaired?
Beacon St. at Charles- tar "curb cut" is lumpy, not so usable.

During your day think of the buildings you have enter, the streets you cross, and the activities in which you have participated in. How accessible are these to persons who are in wheelchairs, blind, or hearing-impaired? What areas have not been made accessible to these individuals? How does accessibility limit their participation in the activities in which you regularly participate? How could these areas be made more accessible to individuals with disabilities?

the one thing I hate -is HEAVY doors-yeah they are wide enoguh-but some material is heavy-even for a person who is not disabled..

I was injured at a mall recently due to poor design at the accessible entrance-the track teh door was on was high-and I tripped over it due to stiffness related to my disability-

Bright white steps are not good for people with vision difficulties-they reflect light and aggravate perceptual difficulties-yet they are 'up to code' the injury to my arm says the code needs to be modified-to note the danger

also-code says that only a couple stairs doesn't need a handrail-when you have limited mobility it does

Dollar stores are infamous to having inaccessible aisles-it's hard to walk through with all the boxes-forget about using a chair---

lack of seating for people with mobility difficulties not usiing a chair-especially the long check out lines......the cashier/manager-needs to let the perosn with a disability sit somewhere while awaiting their turn-(i.e person with disability is after manin red shirt-person w disability sits near register until person with red shirt is down-and tehn rejoins line at frongt)

and teh bus signs--people who are visually impaired can't drive-in my area-th signs for teh bus routes are regularly 7 feet from teh ground-so you can't get close to read them if you hav low vision

How Do i get over my Fear of Wheelchairs?
Just fitting in at the Boston Commons

My "biggest" phobia is the fear of Wheelchairs, im probably the only person in the world with this fear.... But every since i was young i've always had a problem with them and many nightmares about them and also sleepless nights. Just from being in the same room with a person who's in a wheelchair (or if im out at the mall and spot one) I freeze up, it gets hard for me to breath, i start to get really nervous and sweat as if im in a panic, so i am wondering how i can get over this strange fear?

You need to remember that wheelchairs are just a mobility aid for the people sitting in them. You aren't afraid of people who have to wear glasses are you? It is the same concept. I work for a company that sells and rents wheelchair accessible vans, http://www.mcmobilitysystems.com and http://www.abilityvanrentals.com, so I get to be exposed to wheelchair users from all walks of life. Some play sports, others do ballroom dancing, many are soccer moms...they are just regular people like you who happen to need a device to get from point A to point B.

I think the most important remedy is exposure, but maybe not necessarily in a hospital environment. Go somewhere positive like a wheelchair sporting event or a 5K run for your local MS Society chapter. People in wheelchairs don't want to be thought of as victims and they certainly don't want to be feared!

How do they make wheelchairs out of pop tabs?
Bruins On Horseback

Why would they want to collect the entire can to make wheelchairs...if thats even what they are doing with them?

They don't, they redeem the tabs for money to buy the wheelchairs. You honestly can't be THAT dumb or are you just bored and wasting people's time and yahoo answers space?

Field Day activities for kids in wheelchairs?
Beacon St. from Charles to the State House, Boston, MA

I'm planning a field day for a large group of seriously ill children, including some in wheelchairs. I need to plan some activities and create a list of supplies that are needed for the activities by this afternoon (my boss just informed me; I'm not a slacker). I need help for some of these ideas. I know the typical field day activities for well children, but it's harder for me to think about how to adapt them. If you could give me some ideas, that would be wonderful. Thanks!

Water Ballon Toss- this is great because it's hot outside now and they will have fun with it (whether they drop it or not).

You could also do a rally race to a finish line.....maybe basketball, not sure how much access you have to these kinds of facilities but most organizations will help you out with things like this for free.
