Wheelchair

Hi there!
I am looking for information about the day to day life of wheelchair users in order to design an accessible home.
Do you know of any informative website? Maybe you can tell me what you find easy and difficult to do at home?

Doorways should be about 4" wider that the wheel chair.

Any level changes, such as sunken living rooms should have a ramp and front and back doors should have a ramp to the porch.

Bathrooms should be large enough to close door when wheel chair is inside and have enough room to turn the chair around and move it next to the commode, tub or lavatory.

There should be bars on the wall to hold for support in the bathroom for getting onto the commode and gettin into the bath tub.

Narrow hallways with sharp turns into a room should also be avoided.

We have a child's manual wheelchair that our daughter has outgrown. We are travelling to the D.R. (vacation) in Feb. Would like to take this chair with us for someone who needs it. Wondering if anyone has done this before?
They don't weigh it when we are travelling with our daughter. I will contact them ahead of time and see what their policy is regarding donations. Hopefully, no charge.

Very good idea. It would go along with your check-in baggage. Hope the airline staff don't weigh it.

My girlfriend is staying In Fairbanks for a few days after competing in the Wheelchair games in Ancorage. She needs to get from the airport to a hotel and the around town a few times.

Probably the best thing is to go to their department of transportation website or their public transit website.

I am wondering if there is a place I can post what we are looking for and get hotels to bid for our business. 10 nights Paris hotel, ideally in the 4th arrondisement, wheelchair accessible. Thanks!

Inexpensive hotels in Paris in the center tend to be in quite old buildings with no elevator or with tiny elevators that are close to useless for a wheelchair user. The center of Paris is densely built and there is often little or no room for accessbility improvements such as ramps that meet modern standards.
