i was thinking of getting a motor scooter instead of a car. Are motor scooters cheaper?? do you need insurance? Driver license ? if it helps i live in New York but am going to college in Maryland. any info would be extremely helpful

You can get them brand new from $A1000. BUT-heaps of people get them, then realise they don't have the nerves to ride them in the traffic. You can pick them up second hand, sometimes with no more than a couple of hundred kilometers on them, for half that price. The lady who lives next door to my Mum got a second hand one, eight months old, 120km on the clock, still under warranty for $500! Sorry, I have no idea how much the rego and insurance on one would be, but it would be easy for you find out by visiting the Government web site for the state you're going to stay in.

I have a 49cc motor scooter and I am having a problem with the electric start. I turn the ignition on, hold to back brake and press the electric start and all I get is a ticking sound. It will not start using the electric start, only the kick start. I'm thinking it could be either the battery, electric start assembly or the starter relay. How can I test to find out what is wrong?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I study abit of motorcycle so let me answer abit.

Does it has the cranking sound when you try the start the vehicle? If yes, it would be a weak battery. If there's totally no cranking sound, other components may be at fault.

Since you say you hear ticking sound, could it be the "spark plug"? It's best to have another motorcycle to change the parts around to rectify the problem. Try changing the spark plug from another vehicle.

What is better overall, an eletric scooter or a motor scooter. Not the big ones that you drive with, the ones that you stand on.

I am in the market for a new 150cc motor scooter, but there are so many new brands that I am not that familiar with. Does anyone have any recommendations on a quality 150cc scooter? I will mostly be cruising around town on it and going on fairly short little joy rides. Thanks in advance.

There are a lot of scooters out there that are of questionable quality. In general, try to stick to your more reputable brands, and always buy from a dealer who specializes in scooters or who sells both scooters and motorcycles.

Ask yourself a few questions:

1) Does the warranty cover parts and labor?
2) Is there a dealer nearby who can provide service if needed?
3) How long has the dealer been in business?
4) How many dealers are selling the same brand in your area?

A few of the more reputable brands in scooters are listed below:

Of those, many make a 150cc size scooter. I've heard many good things about the Genuine Blur and Kymco People 150. If you want to look at a 125cc scooter, I personally own a Yamaha Vino 125 and love it.

Keep in mind that in most states in the US, the 150cc size will require you to obtain a motorcycle license in order to legally ride.
