Mobility Wheelchairs

I want to get an academic reference if possible but Google isnt in the mood to help me today! Either that or I am looking in the wrong places! I am trying to make the point in my essay that disabled people are now a visual part of our society - visible in schools, workplaces and in leisure facilities.

With $1 trillion, including $220 billion in discretionary income, people with disabilities have the most buying power of any traditionally underrepresented group, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Buying power, or disposable income, is the total personal income available after taxes. Total annual buying power in the United States exceeded $10 trillion for the first time in 2007 and is projected to be $13 trillion in 2012. Multicultural markets, which will account for more than a fifth of total buying power this year, account for the lion's share of that growth. And leading the way are people with disabilities.

Here's what you should know about the buying power of people with disabilities:

* More than one in five Americans, approximately 54 million, have a disability, making people with disabilities the largest traditionally underrepresented group in the nation. Electric Wheelchairs - Power Mobility Devices

The not too recent test evacuation of the A380 prompted me to write this. Perhaps someone from airlines and cruise operators could enlighten me on how operators deal with passengers that have reduced mobility (eg. wheelchair-bound, elderly, crutches, etc.) in terms of placement in the vessel (for normal operations). And also how these passengers are evacuated in the event of an emergency. Many thanks. No names of operators required.

the disabled come out first in any emergent situation.the wheelchair bound and the disabled who cant hardly walk along with heart patients

This is not meant to be offensive I'm just curios as my friend is in a wheelchair and he told me that it was.

Any motorized machine whether it be a scooter, motorized wheelchair, motorcycle, vehicle, etc., I believe that under the motor vehicle act, that it still counts as driving under the influence.

mines a Days Escape but you have to decide if you need a wheelchair or a scooter it depends on your
disability to a certain extent,
there are a few mobility shops in the area but the ones i have found to be the best for price and service is a company called First Choice Mobility Ltd they would be able to assess what you really need, here's a link to there site

The traffic code governing this is 551.201. We have a debate between another officer and myself whether you can write a DWI on someone in a electric wheelchair. I say he is considered a pedestrian (I am a rookie officer but freshly studied traffic code) he is a vetern officer who is very experienced. We are looking for the textbook answer, not what we can do in the courtroom. We welcome your opinions.

No, not for purposes of DWI. Keep in mind that DWI is covered by the Texas Penal Code. The Texas Transportation Code is not relevant for DWI.

Driving while intoxicated is covered under Section 49.04 of the Texas Penal Code, which refers to a "motor vehicle". Section 49.01 refers us to Section 32.34(a) for the definition of a "motor vehicle".

Section 32.34(a) of the Texas Penal Code defines "motor vehicle" as "a device in, on, or by which a person or property is or may be transported or drawn on a highway, except a device used exclusively on stationary rails or tracks."

Obviously, an electric wheelchair cannot transport a person on a highway, so it's not a motor vehicle according to the Texas Penal Code.
