I am 19 years old and wanting a gas powered scooter for local commuting and riding around college. How much does insurance on one of these run? If you do not have one currently insured then don't answer because I know it is not the same as motorcycle insurance since scooters only get up to 45 mph. Thanks!
p.s. "who cares" I work for the state department full time and have the money for insurance. I am just wondering how much it runs because I like to be responsible with money. If the costs of insurance make up the savings in gas then it is not worth getting one.
OK, I'm an agent and have insured them, but don't currently have an insurance policy covering one, because I don't own one.
But, the rates are based on what coverages you want to buy, how old you are, where you live, your credit score, and what your driving record is like. It could be anywhere from $300 a year, to $3,000 or even higher.
You can get a quote from www.progressive.com, they write scooter insurance - although not in all states.

I will be going to school at Stephen F. Austin next year and was wondering if I need a license to drive a gas powered scooter(like a vespa) on campus. I know they're allowed on the campus but I don't know if I have to have a license for one.
License and helmet in Texas. The alternative is electric bicycles pedal assist machine like the Schwinn Campus, and World. My commuter bicycle is the Schwinn Continental 30 volt battery pack really great to silently ride around. On the bike paths it embarrasses many high performance riders. Vespas Are not cheep any more and the two stroke motors are dirty running at least you still get some exercise with a bike.

If I purchase a 50 CC gas powered scooter. I know they are normally not street legal. But it can go a fairly decent speed 35-40mph
is it possible to make it street legal? by buying insurance or something?
If not, where IS it legal to ride these?
If it's not legal to ride it on the streets where you live, then that's it... There's nothing you can do to make it legal. Mini-bikes, pocket bikes, mini-scooters, etc, are all motorized toys that are designed and intended for use off-road or on private land only. They are not safe mixing with larger vehicles on public roadways.

The Plus Side of Gas Powered Scooters
I was driving my car to work the other day and I got stuck behind this slow poke in a gas powered scooter and it got me to thinking: why do people ride around on these things? The guy was trying to go as fast as he could on his little go-ped but there was just no way for him to keep up with the traffic flow. In fact, he seemed to just block traffic and waste everyone’s time.
When I got home I decided to do a little research about gas powered scooters and maybe write a scolding remark or two to anyone looking to buy one but then I came across the Gas Powered Scooter Review . After reading for a few hours about all of the benefits to gas powered scooters: how they’re green, how they’re economical, how they have plushy seats, I decided maybe I would buy one for myself.
