How can I make my old dad's mobility scooter faster so he can keep up when we go for a drive in the country

I assume it has a battery powered electric motor. If where you vacation is mostly flat ground you can do either of two things: #1. Install a larger sprocket on the motor by one or two teeth. Measure the motor shaft with a vernier caliper to find out if it's metric or standard. Go to any bearing company in your area as they can get any size: # of teeth, shaft and pitch (Distance between teeth).
#2. Install a larger rear tire circumference. If you want to get fancy a slightly larger diameter wheel rim / tire combination.

It's important to do one or the other of these ideas. If you try to do both the poor little electric motor may not have enough power for the higher gear ratio.
Another thing. Most of these little carts are made in China and everything will be metric.

how can I make my mobility scooter faster..it was in storage for 5 years?

(I have put in 2 new batteries) it initially takes off very fast but than seems to bog down. It does not seem to be moving at 4mph. Thank you for your time

In storage for 5 years? Probably corrosion inside the electric motor. How to make it faster? It will have to be cleaned up i.e. dismantle the motor and remove the corrosion, which will be on the magnets (likely) and commutator (less likely).

Have you ever seen a hit and run mobility scooter ridden by 70 year old? How fast do these scooters go?

I have to admit that I laughed when I read this. Im really sorry.

I hope the injured person fully recovers.
"The man on the scooter was described as an elderly man with white hair, in his 70s, and we are looking for him"

Well, that narrows it down- lol

There are two classifications of mobility scooter. One can travel at a maximum speed of 4mph and the other a maximum speed of 8mph. The 4mph vehicle is for pavement use only, and can be driven on the road only to cross the road or if there is no pavement such as on some country lanes.

The 8mp vehicle, can be driven on the road and the pavement but must have a half speed switch that limits the top speed to 4mph when used on the pavements. The 8mph vehicle must have lights and indicators in order to comply with the regulations for road going vehicles.

You must remember that a Mobility Scooter is really a version of a wheelchair and is governed by the same regulation, legislation in UK law and also regulation and legislation in the EU. Wheelchair users have a right of access and a right to use both pavements and roads where applicable in order to go about their daily business.

All vehicles sold in the UK comply with the speed regulations, otherwise the Medical Devices Ageny, Wheelchair Division based in Blackpool would not allow it's sale. It is very strictly monitored.

A driver of a wheelchair and mobility scooter is liable for it's safe use. But that is a police matter. Generally the police are not very up to scratch with these things, that's why when I was in the industry, the police were forever on the phone to me asking me the legalities for example when someone was drunk in control of a mobility scooter

Hope that answers your question

EDIT: if you think that 4mph or 8 mph was not fast enough for the incident you are talking about, then you need to drive one at those speeds to see how fast it is. But keep in mind that only disabled persons are allowed to drive them in public places, or able bodied persons for the purpose of demonstrating the vehicle and training in it's use

EDIT: Weird how you get a thumbs down for an absolutely correct answer when people have no idea. After 10 years of selling the things, I think I know a little about it. I am a qualified Occupational Therapist after all

mobility scooter can i make it go faster?

a friend of the family has just bought a £1000 scooter but with this chap being a big bloke i think his weight slows it down, when others are on it my self included it still has a nice little speed about 6mph and im 15 stone , is there any thing we could do for him to make it a little more powerful maybe 8- 10 mph when he's on it? if so whats the best thing to try? would a bigger battery help? please genuine answers only thank you.

Hi! they are sold with different power 4/8/10mph. the more power the better they go. have you tried turning the power knob up? You need this to make it go slower when you, shall we say coming in your front door it needs to go slow.

Looking for Fast Mobility Scooters? Here's Mobility Scooters ...

Mobility scooters have made a tremendously positive impact on the ability of those with physical challenges to perform their daily activities and participate in social events.  Although mobility scooters are intended to be of physical assistance and are not manufactured or designed essentially for speed, many experienced riders already know and enjoy the benefits they receive from their mobility scooter, but they may wish they could move just a little bit quicker. There are a few mobility scooters that are faster than others. Fast mobility scooters might be appreciated by those who use their scooter to run local errands or for those who visit parks, golf courses, playgrounds and other outdoor attractions where a good amount of territory is generally covered at a moderate pace throughout the course of the visit.  A fast mobility scooter will allow the user to keep up with friends and family and enjoy many of the same sites.
