Hydraulic Chair Lift

This has to do with pressure and fluids... In a closed system such as a hydraulic lift, the ratio of the applied force to the surface area to which the force is applied inward will equal the ratio of the outward force and the surface area at the other end. The equation looks something like this:

(F(in)/A(in))=(F(out)/A(out))

So if you applied a force of 10 N to a surface area of 0.5 m^2 (yes, this is large, I know, but it's just an example) and the surface area of the fluid on the other end doing the lifting is 5 m^2, then the outward force will be 100 N. Thus a small amount of initial force produces a much larger result.

Dentists' chairs are examples of hydraulic-lift systems. If a chair weighs 1700 N and rests on a piston with a cross-sectional area of 1260 cm2, what force must be applied to the smaller piston with a cross-sectional area of 72 cm2 to lift the chair?

I have noticed that almost every office chair has a gas lift lever, not hydraulic lift lever (The kind you can just "pump" up with). Can somebody prove me wrong, and tell me where I can find an office chair with a hydraulic base? 10 pts for the best/most logical answer.

What is with your obsession with chairs, hydraulic chairs, barber chairs, chairs that lift up? I don't get it. You keep asking stupid questions over and over again, the same ones!!!

a) would be the mass x the acceleration of gravity, 9.8ms^2 is often used, but it is sometimes rounded to 10, so either 1470N or 1500N, actually, to two significant figures, 1470 rounds to 1500

b) if one saves the rounding for the end, not using the 1500N from above, (150 * 9.8) / 25 = 58.8N/cm² which would round to 59N/cm² or 590kPa

A dentist's chair with a patient in it weighs 2020 N. The output plunger of a hydraulic system begins to lift the chair, when the dentist's foot applies a force of 47.6 N to the input piston. Neglect any height difference between the plunger and the piston. What is the ratio of the radius of the plunger to the radius of the piston?

Well as a French guy named Pascal said, the pressure in a closed system is the same throughout, and we know that p=F/A and therefore F1/A1=F2/A2. Also, A=(pi)R^2
F1/F2=A1/A2 => F1/F2 = (pi)(R1)^2/(pi)(R2)^2 = (R1/R2)^2

R1/R2 = sqrt(F1/F2) = sqrt(2020/47.6) = 6.5, so the output plunger has a radius more than 6.5 times greater than the input piston.
