My wife couldn't climb the steps to the second floor of our home. I had a stair chair lift installed at a cost of $1600.00. Can I claim it as a deduction on my income tax?
Usually that kind of thing counts as a medical expense and is deductible on your Schedule A. Keep in mind that you must itemize to be able to use schedule A deductions.
Also keep in mind that there is a floor on your medical expenses--meaning that your total medical expenses (including doctor visits and prescriptions, surgery, etc.) must be at least 7.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI).

We're considering buying a home, but it has a chair lift on the stairs (that we don't want). How expensive or difficult are these to remove?
You could probably get someone to remove it for free if you were to give them the chair lift. Since they are usually added on to houses well after they are built, I'm sure they are not too hard to remove if you are a bit handy. Put up flyers in grocery stores or on craigslist offering the chairlift to whoever can remove it for you.

Help please. I need to know if Insurance companies in the US cover costs of stair lifts. Thank you!
You'd have to check with your insurance company, and then have to qualify if they do cover it. Don't forget to look around for used ones.
I am in the process of purchasing a new home and all secondary bedrooms are on the second floor. I take care of my grandmother and she is in denial about her ability. So in order for her to move around the house easily and allow her to be close to my daughter I would like to install a lift system on the stairs. But I was wondering if there are any grants available to assist in the purchase of the lift chair.
There are grants available - they are called Disabled Facility Grants and will depend on your Local Authority on how these are carried out. In my area the Local Authority uses a Home Improvement Agency that organise the works to be carried out.
Initially you will need to get in touch with Social Services (the Occupational Therapists) in order that they can make a fully qualified assessment of your grandmother's needs and make a recommendation. It can be a long process, but again it depends on the Local Authority.
Hope that has helped

Chair Lift For Stairs
Under the Americans with Disabilities Act was published, with facilities to facilitate access by disabled persons and persons with disabilities have begun in public buildings and sites of interest. The handicap chairlift for stairs has been developed to the exclusion of people who have difficulty climbing stairs. The chairlift for stairs has different shapes and forms and is usually expensive and takes too much space. If the price of a disabled stair lift is not an important issue for a company of our public services, the purchase of a chair lift for stairs in a private home can be very expensive. In this situation, handicap stair lifts have a smaller amount of space. Handicap wheelchair lifts have been developed for the specific needs and provide a good alternative to the lifts or vertical wheelchair lifts because of cheaper prices and smaller dimensions. Wheelchair lifts for disabled function exactly like stair lifts, but for people in wheelchairs are not only human. Instead of a staircase in a chair lift, stair lifts for wheelchairs are equipped with a platform with the wheelchair up and down the pole. This type of stair lifts disability is the most common in institutions, subway stations, trains and public buildings. Handicap stair lift residential wheelchair is not as common, but as mentioned, a stair lift for wheelchair users at home can be the perfect alternative to expensive lifts.
