Where might I find grants for the purchase of a stair lift for the elderly?

I am in the process of purchasing a new home and all secondary bedrooms are on the second floor. I take care of my grandmother and she is in denial about her ability. So in order for her to move around the house easily and allow her to be close to my daughter I would like to install a lift system on the stairs. But I was wondering if there are any grants available to assist in the purchase of the lift chair.

There are grants available - they are called Disabled Facility Grants and will depend on your Local Authority on how these are carried out. In my area the Local Authority uses a Home Improvement Agency that organise the works to be carried out.

Initially you will need to get in touch with Social Services (the Occupational Therapists) in order that they can make a fully qualified assessment of your grandmother's needs and make a recommendation. It can be a long process, but again it depends on the Local Authority.

Hope that has helped

A cheap device for one old person to assist an old one legged person off the floor back onto the wheel chair?

The old one legged person slips off his wheel chair and cannot lift himself up to a couch or wheel chair. The other old person should not try to pick up the full weight of the one legged person. What cheap simple leverage device can be constructed for the old person get one the legged person back on the wheel chair?

Whether this is exactly what you had in mind or not, but there is a strap device which allows one person to lift the other to at least a sitting position, putting the strap behind the other's head and upper bodyand lifting in that way, using leverage of the strap and the higher position of the person doing the lifting. I don't describe it well, but it's available from one of the hospital supply outlets for which I've had catalogs. You could check it out with a search engine using "Upright Strap" or "Lifting Strap" or "Lift Assist," something like that. I'd suggest trying "Froogle," Google's product search engine. There is also a device that allows the person in need of assist to grip one looped end of a two-sided rubber piece so the one assisting can pull the other without actually lifting dead weight, as such. Both of these would at least put the person sitting upright. Wish I could help you more.

I've now gone on Froogle and found the device I was speaking of, called a "Lift Assist." It's $21.95 from Colonial Medical at www.colonial medical.com. It is lifting from the waist but up close. There is also a device known as the I Tech Pal Assist Lift, which is said to help get a patient off the floor, into a wheelchair, and this sells for $34.95. It's from Emergency Medical Products Inc. and its website is www.buyemp.com. Possibly this will give you more help.

why do you think this article on tennessee lethal injections is newsworthy?

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A federal judge ruled Wednesday that Tennessee's new lethal injection procedures are cruel and unusual punishment, interrupting plans to execute a killer next week.

The protocol "presents a substantial risk of unnecessary pain" and violates death row inmate Edward Jerome Harbison's constitutional protections under the Eighth Amendment, U.S. District Judge Aleta Trauger said.

The new protocol, released in April, does not ensure that inmates are properly anesthetized before the lethal injection is administered, Trauger said, which could "result in a terrifying, excruciating death."

A spokeswoman for the state attorney general's office said officials are reviewing the ruling and haven't decided whether to appeal. Gov. Phil Bredesen's office had no immediate comment.

Harbison was scheduled to be executed Sept. 26 for beating an elderly woman to death during a burglary in 1983.

Trauger did not issue a stay or throw out the death sentence for Harbison, who has lost all his appeals. He can be legally executed once the state adopts a valid method of execution, she said.

Another federal judge in Nashville this year ordered a delay in the execution of convicted killer Philip Workman, citing the likelihood that the state's new guidelines could still cause unconstitutional pain and suffering. But a three-judge panel of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals lifted that temporary restraining order, and Workman was executed by lethal injection May 9.

Bredesen, a Democrat, in February placed a 90-day moratorium on executions because of several glaring problems with the state's execution guidelines, including conflicting instructions that mixed lethal injection instructions with those for the electric chair.

George Little, State Department of Correction commissioner, adopted the new protocol despite having knowledge about the remaining risks of excessive pain for inmates, Trauger said. A spokeswoman for Little did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

Little did not give enough consideration to a recommendation to discard the standard three-drug lethal injection cocktail in favor of a single drug method, Trauger said. Current training and medical expertise are not sufficient to ensure a painless execution, she said.

Most states use three drugs — thiopental, an anesthetic; pancuronium bromide, a nerve blocker and muscle paralyzer; and potassium chloride, a drug to stop the heart. Each is supposed to be capable of killing by itself, but if not, the anesthetic is supposed to render the inmate unconscious while the other drugs do the job.

Lethal injection has been adopted by 37 states as a cheaper and more humane alternative to electrocution, gas chambers and other execution methods. But at least 11 states suspended its use after opponents alleged it was ineffective and cruel.

The issue came to a head last year in California when a federal judge ordered that doctors assist in killing Michael Morales, who was convicted of raping and murdering a teenage girl. Doctors refused, and legal arguments continue.

The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last month lifted a more than year-old stay on executions in Missouri, refusing to block capital punishment while a death-row inmate asked the U.S. Supreme Court to declare the state's form of lethal injection to be an unconstitutionally cruel punishment.

Tennessee executed convicted child killer Daryl Holton last week in its first electrocution since 1960.

Bredesen on Friday commuted a death sentence for Michael Joe Boyd because of "grossly inadequate" legal representation during post-conviction hearings. Boyd, who now goes by Mika'eel Abdullah Abdus-Samad, was convicted of murdering a man during an armed robbery in 1986. The death sentence was commuted to life without possibility of parole

The judge is correct.

Edit to get a life:

We have a death penalty not a "death by torture penalty."

Same Question - different category: PROs and CONs of a REVERSE MORTGAGE for my elderly parents?

My folks paid of house many moons ago, and now, just depending on Social Security and Mom's Medical Insurance, they are needing funds to live off of AND to assist in re-vamping the house.

They need to change the house somewhat physically because Dad will no longer be able to go upstairs (for showering) unless something is done SOON.

We are currently looking at options (such as a stair lift chair).

My siblings are very VERY wary of the Reverse Mortgage. They are afraid that someone will take the house from them when my folks pass away. I don't care about that as much as Ma & Pa need the money to help them have some Quality In Life. The house is junk, and falling on it's ear, anyway. I'm surprised it hasn't been condemned by the city, like the house next door to them that is now a lovely open lot.

yawnwho - yeah, that is my point - hang the estate. Ma & Pa are #1 in my eyes right now. I think the major hangup is my sibling who is the Executor of their estate, he has never owned a home, and I'm thinking that he 'hopes' that the house will fall to him...but I doubt he'd use it - probably just sell it.
I think I'm just going to have to just leave this to God.

A reverse mortgage can be wonderful if done right. I usually suggest that people take the funds as a line of credit. They request a sum for a particular thing and then spend it during the month that the check arrived. This way it wont affect any benefits that depend on your assets or income.
You will never outlive a reverse mortgage because they wont give you more than about 80% of the home value. What you get will be determined by age and value of the home. Sounds like your parents may have a problem getting a reverse mortgage if the home is in too bad repair.
All the charges are due when the mortgage comes due and you are charged a monthly fee (added in to what is paid at the end). The fees can be a bit hefty. The loan would only come due if a person dies, sells the house or is not living there for 12 consecutive months.
Whatever is left that was not used in the line of credit minus the fees would go to the persons estate if they pass away.
Be wary of companies that havent done reverse mortgages often or for a long time. Two of the best in the business are Financial Freedom and Wells Fargo. Make sure you are getting a mortgage backed by the Feds and that your parents go through the required independent counseling so that they are aware of what they are signing.
You might tell your siblings that if Mom or Dad has to go into a nursing home and is getting Medicaid, that the state will put a lein against the house anyway to get reimbursed for what they spent on Medicaid.
I think the wise choice is to talk to a reputable reverse mortgage specialist to see what they could get to make the home more adaptable. They can also use the funds to pay for in home care if needed.
