The drain stopper will not turn and rest in the open position-keeps falling down. Any ideas on how to fix? Is it the rollerball?
The only one of these I've ever seen was on the front end plumbing of an antique clawfoot tub I installed for a customer, 15 years ago. It was all brass and the drain tube that pulled up had a white glass ball knob on the top which you grasped and lifted it up, then twisted it and set it back down and the small pins that were inserted into the sides sat in a small "V", one on each side of the tube, to hold it up and allow drainage. Down, of course, was in a stopper position.
I am weighing options on how to get a new tub from my basement to a second floor bathroom. My house is over 100 years old and the stairs to the second floor have two 90 degree turns. I think the best option is going through the second story window, but i don't know the best way to lift it up that high. Any ideas?
I agree with Ibanman. You need to have an engineer do a load analysis on the floor, especially in an older house. When that house was built, there were no building codes, so houses were built for function and not so much for form. Yes it has stood all this time, but why take the risk. Even today, people miss things, and the lowest man on the job, can still make a difference. As a 1st year apprentice, I questioned the placement of a large boiler that was being installed on the 5th floor of a doctors clinic. I knew that water weighs 8.33 lbs. per gallon, and we were installing a 250gallon boiler. The floor was only 3" of concrete with wire mesh, and when I asked the question, everyone laughed at first. When I showed them the combined weight of the unit (1800lbs.) plus the weight of the water (2083lbs.), and this didn't factor in the weight of all the pipes, installation ceased, and the next day, 4 steel I-beams were welded in place below the boiler location. Oh yeah, did I fail to mention the 4'' concrete housekeeping pad that was supposed to be poured on the floor for the boiler to sit on? The engineer later said, had we even set the unit in place, without the water in it, the floor would have been at its limit. He said maybe the pipes would have slowed it down as the floor gave way. Anyway, if you find out that the floor is rated to handle the weight, a pulley system could be rigged up to lift the tub, or you could hire a crane to lift it for you. Good luck to you!

I was trying to clean my bath tub and realized the drain cover was dirty. When I lifted the drain plug it came out. Two of the 4 engaging cross members were broken and now I can't remove the worn out assembly. Inserting handles of pliers isn't moving the drain cover at all. Its too tight. Could it be because of the plumber's putty? Please help.
They can get corroded and difficult to remove. It is screwed into the part of the drain that is under the tub. Depending on how old your tub is, the part underneath may be metal - newer ones are plastic and don't corrode.
The only way to fix it is to get the metal part of the drain you can see out by unscrewing it - counter-clockwise. If the 'crosshair' piece is broken and you cannot engage it to turn it, the only way I know to get it out is to carefully start prying it out. Once you start that, you have to finish the job or the tub will leak and there is no going back.
If you damage the piece under the tub, then the tub has to come out to replace that piece, or if on a wood floor with access underneath, the ceiling under the tub has to be removed. Not a small job.
You might want to call a plumber to fix this one. He might just have enough experience to get it out in one piece.

Any company that sells or rents medical equipment such as
hospital beds, bathroom equipment and etc. can either order for
you or give you the name of a supplier that makes rehab equipment such as that. I know theres Invacare, and Sam Prestons and numerous other companies that make this equipment or can ship to you. If you still can't find what you are
looking for go to a plumbing equipment retailer and see if they have catalogues for specialty equipment.
In my bathtub, there's a lift and turn drain and the drain has become clugged with hair. How do you get the lift and turn to come completely out of the drain to remove the hair? I've tried turning it and unscrewing it, but it just won't come out! Any ideas how to get it out? Thanks!
make sure you're turning the right direction and it should lift out. after you reach in (gross I know) and pull out the hair put something chemical to dissolve what is still in there. otherwise your back to square one right away
