Raise Mattress

I have a mattress on the floor in my college room. I cant afford to raise it by buying a 100 dollar box spring or frame. Any cheap ideas?

Good idea, Monkey with a Gun. I was thinking a wooden platform that someone built for you. My husband made one for our son. Four pieces of wood with ledges inside to put slats in and then a sheet of plywood to fit and then the mattress. Hope this helps. Roxanne

Physicists and physicians! I woke up this morning, noticing my bed was moving slighly to my heartbeat...! I had moved some things around the room, my bedframe was against a metal-framed bookcase (lightweight bookcase). The whole bedframe-bookcase had a slight rhythmic vibration in time with my heartbeat when I lay perfectly still on my bed. There was an empty water glass that vibrated in time with my heartbeat.

As I lay there, it occurred to me that the bedframe/bookcase/my skeletal structure was a closed system, and my heartbeat would be the energy driving that system.

Question: Given a surface to lay on, (or substance to be immersed in) of sufficient resilience, isn't it possible to slow down a person's heartbeat enough to raise their blood pressure and kill them? My premise is that under the proper circumstances, one's surroundings become a closed system into which a person's heartbeat is perpetually adding work...?

Help me out with this.

If your mattress smothers you to the point it blocks your airway, or your blood circulation...

Otherwise I would say no, your mattress will drain your energy to the point it kills you. And trust me, I had a lot of practice.

I used to have a metal bed frame that came free with my last mattress set. I got a new, larger bed so I couldn't use the same frame but it seems I don't need it because it's thicker and already at the same height as my old one (with the frame). I searched online to see if there was any reason to buy a new frame (makes boxspring last longer, etc) but only found one guy saying "you MUST use a bed frame" but without a reason why.

The bed frame will also give you something to attach a headboard and/or footboard to if you want. Other than that, a frame gives you some storage under the bed, and allows for a little air circulation under the mattress I suppose, but no, you don't have to use a frame.

I have one of those large mattresses on a regular sized box spring so bed is very high when put on the slats that go with my frame, yet kind of low when I put the box spring then mattress on the floor.

Have you tried a Low Profile Foundation. The normal ones are 8" usually and the low profile ones are 5".
