I recently had shoulder surgery and have been home all day for the last 2 months. I have recently started therapy twice a week and am gone for about 2-3 hours. I come home to find couch pillows torn up, shoes chewed and throw blankets ripped apart. I have never had a problem with them chewing things. I don't know what i am going to do when i have to return to work, I don't want to have to kennel them when i am gone. About the same time i had surgery one of my children and their 2 children moved in with me. Until the kids moved in the dogs had their own bedroom with a queen size mattress for them to sleep on, now they just sleep wherever. They seem to enjoy all the attention the get from the kids they just have a problem when left alone.
Seems like they have separation anxiety. They don't know about your issues and can not connect that to why they are being left alone so much more than usual. There are special dog trainers out there that can help you with this if it's a very serious case. It takes time and patience to get your dogs to not be afraid of being left alone.
They see you as their pack leader and when you are gone, they don't know what to do and will mess things up to release their energy. Try taking them out for a long walk or a good run before you leave. Don't baby talk them before you leave. Try not to talk to them or get them excited 30 mins before you leave as well. If you have the time, slowly get them used to you leaving by walking out the door casually at short time intevals at first and increasing the time you leave longer and longer. This takes weeks and even months of training before they are totally in control of themselves when you leave.
Seek help from a professional if you think that's better. They can really help you.

My dog has horrible allergies and no vet can help her without us refinancing our house....the costs are outrageous....they quoted us $1000-$5000...We called our old vet in the Northeast and he suggestioned Benedryl 2 times a day as well as massage
Recently our dog has stopped eatting any and all dog food even if its from the health food dog store..(Paul Newman kind)
She will ONLY eat raw hamberger....Is this ok for her...
Also since she's an older dog 8 yrs old and shepherd mix she started limping using most of her weight on left side...Shes walks herself up on her front paws and then rocks to get up...I massage her leg she limps regularly on once shes on her feet..any kind of heat treatments massage techniques to help her get up easier???
Do you know of any doggie type stair lift we can purchase so she can stay in the bedroom upstairs with us at nite...She has always slept on her mattress bed right next to our bed.....
Thanks for the KIND answers and suggestions..
Yahoo has many groups relating to raw feeding and how to do it so that you are nutrionally correct.

is one of them. Many who feed raw report that their dog's allergies cleared up.
As for who sounds like arthritis, glucosamine is good ,but takes a while to help. For pain relief of arthritis, the herbal, Boswellia is very good. It can be used for humans and dogs. I've given it to a neighbor's 14 yr old dog. She walked much easier after a couple of days. My husband takes it in place of Celebrex 75% of the time. He tells me that it works.
I order my Boswellia from http://www.swansonvitamins.com

We have the "head" side elevated, but he always ends up sideways at the bottom, coughing & choking from the reflux. We Can't put him in a chair, swing, carseat... he has hypertonicity & needs this sleep time to stretch & relax his muscles. He also has flat head syndrome so the chair is not an option (this is because he has torticollis, so he would only look to one side, leaving the other side on the mattress, chair... anytime he was down. Its getting better now with therapy)
thanks!
When my daughter was a baby we purchased a product from Babies R Us called "Inclined to Sleep" because she did the same thing. It cost about $22 and worked great!

I don't ususually have a problem with my back, but after moving air conditioners last weekend, and then sleeping on a "not so great" mattress for two nights after, an aching back has set in and NOT going away! (Yes, it's lower back.) FYI what I have tried:
Heating pad, heating packs, alternating heat with cold, muscle ointment, pain medication (Alleve), gentle exercise and flexing (although maybe someone would have some specific ideas here?), avoiding any lifting of even medium variety, trying to stay off the computer for most part(!), pillow for support....anyone with other ideas???
PS I have tried chiropractor in the past, and didn't like. Would consider massage therapy, but hoping for other solution before spending time and $$ for massage.
PPS Also wanted to let you know that I have NO medical insurance.
Appreciate answers still incoming, just an update on situation:
Did go to a trusted massage therapist. She thinks lower 5 back vertebrae + hips out of alignment. In doing pressure point, she really "hit home" (with pain) on an area of the chest, where the "psoas" is located (never heard of it before), a sausage-shaped muscle connecting back with leg; runs alongside ribcage. Makes sense because pain has begun alternating with lower right back/buttocks and right knee. Vicki is excellent, gives me sliding scale and really knows her stuff. Movement definitely started happening after seeing her; first time I have had periods of comfort in over a week. Trying to decide whether to go back to see her one more time this week --or go see a new chiropractor who magically "fell into my life" with high recommendation this week. Problem with chiropractor is the cost: $150 for first visit, $100 for visits thereafter,.

1. I found the advice below from FamilyDoctor.org very helpful; even 2 to 3 pillows in your bed under your knees/legs can help take pressure off the back; I've tried it. Also if lying on your side, use a pillow under one leg and a 2nd pillow between the legs to take pressure off (this last is from experience & experimenting).
Here is from theFamilyDoctor.org website re lower back pain:
"The best position for relief when your back hurts is to lie on your back on the floor with pillows under your knees, with your hips and knees bent and your feet on a chair, or just with your hips and knees bent. This takes the pressure and weight off your back. If you're resting a hurt back, you may need 1 to 2 days of this sort of rest. Resting longer than this can cause your muscles to weaken, which can slow your recovery. Even if it hurts, walk around for a few minutes every hour."
2. As may have been mentioned above, use heat but definitely MOIST heat, big difference.
3. A friend has just recommended to me a book called "Healing Back Pain" by John Sarno MD. this is a different approach, dealing with stress and back pain, the "mind-body connection". haven't yet finished reading, but my friend's neighbor swears by it. I have put link below to a website where you can read excerpts from the book.

wow, it sounds like you have lot on your mind. Anxiety, panic, and a busy life can cause tiredness. Especially if you have thoughts running through you head constantly. Here are some tips to help.
*Embrace your uniqueness, you have some anxiety and panic, learn how to deal with these situations from researching online and talking to a therapist . Accepty yourself as you are... you are great.
*Applaud yourself on eating well and taking care of your body.
*Take 20 min naps to help you refresh yourself.
*The want to sleep all the time may be a sign of depression and being overloaded at home and work with too many responsabilities. Talk to your therapist about the possibility of depression(so it may be treated) Then talk to your husband about taking over some of your chores/ duties as home until you feel like you can cope better.
*Realize you may just be bogged down with too much to do and you may need to eliminate or deligate some responsabilities.
*Try meditating for 10 min in the morning and evening, you can buy good tapes by Rodney Yee (D0 internet search) and he walks you through a meditation. You may need this small amount of alone time to gather and collect and refresh yourself. Good luck!
