I need to buy a standard queen size mattress to fit a Murphy bed. I've been told that the extra-thick mattresses will not fit, but have no idea how thick a standard queen mattress is! I've seen just over 7 inches and up to 10 inches thick. How thick is a Standard Queen Mattress?
Having sold mattresses for several years, I can tell you that there really is no such thing as a standard queen mattress thickness. Even the perimeter dimensions vary slightly, depending on the amount of padding and upholstery. Typically, a queen mattress is 60 inches wide and 80 inches long. The depth or thickness can vary from a few inches to more than 15", common on today's popular "pillow top" styles. I suggest that you either ask the Murphy Bed dealer for their recommended dimensions. If that's not an option, ask a local bedding retailer. They should know which of their mattresses should fit Murphy's. On a final note, lower-end, less padded mattresses generally tend to be skinnier, as are "hotel" type mattresses.

All the sheets I buy are loose and bunch up and come off. Or they are just plain oversized. I just have a regular 12" deep queen mattress.
Why is it so diffucult to find sheets that fit correctly nowadays?
Unfortunately this is a sign of the times. your mattress is of older contruction and unless you can find sheet sets made specifically for a couch bed matress they will always be bunchy like that. One thing that may work is to buy the little elastic things that clip on to you sheets to prevent them from pulling up at the corners. If you pull the matress super tight and clip those above the bulk, the sheets won't slip and it will look much smoother at the corners.

I have an older, regular size queen mattress. I tried twice to buy a new sheet set and the bottom, fitted sheet is way too deep. My mattress is only 8-9" deep.
Anyone have any ideas where I can find the proper size sheet?
The stores only have the ones that fit mattresses up to 18" deep.
Most sheets today are geared towards the new pillow top beds. At bed bath and beyond they sel these nifty little clips than hold the sheets in place. They are really cheap and will keep you from going insane.

i am wanting to use my waterbed frame but put a regular queen mattress on it. is this possible?
no you have to go one size down, the reg mattress has to be a full size for a queen size frame even then you will have a little space in between on both sides

Queens are typically come in two different lengths, 80" and 84". So if your bed frame has a footboard you will want to measure the length from the interior of the headboard to the interior of the footboard.
However, if you are just wondering about the metal bed frame, and do not have to "fit" you bed inside of headboards/footboards, you should be fine. The metal frame has two ends that distinguish what end goes where. The end with the corner bracket holts the end that actually holds the bed within the frame. The opposite end of this fram should have to brackets that are actually open or flat, which will accomodate either length.
